Should a Welsh region really sign Liam Williams?
So, it appears Liam Williams is on the market and is interested in a move back to Wales. WalesOnline understands three regions - Cardiff, Dragons and Ospreys - have expressed an interest.
On the face of it the 89-times-capped Wales full-back is an attractive proposition. He's a top end international class player, he's experienced and he's Welsh, but would signing Williams really be value for money for any of Wales' professional sides?
Well, that depends on a few things but there are certainly pros and cons if any of them were to take the plunge. Given Wales' lack of experience in the back three it's understandable why Warren Gatland would want Williams back in the fold.
He may be 33 but he remains a quality operator but playing in Japan doesn't make it easy for Gatland to select him. If he is to continue his international career it would make more sense from a national perspective if he was based at one of the four regions with his workload managed.
However, if this were to happen it needs to make sense for the side in question as well. Given they are all feeling the financial pinch and are currently set to operate from a salary cap of £4.5m (although that could rise to £5m) the regions have to be extremely frugal about how they spend their money.
